Track Name: Strawman
STRAWMAN

Please only read parenthetically
All these big schemes I attempted pathetically
I lit the match, but never the fuse
A slight oversight one could easily excuse

Hey, it’s alright
As long as I say that I tried
When everything’s wrung out dry
I’ll be a strawman running into a burning building

We only saw what we wanted to
Always the peak and never the passage through
But our arms and our legs grew tired
Just couldn’t glean how to stay so inspired

But it’s alright
As long as we say that we tried
Grew wings, but just couldn’t fly
Tied to the ground but in love with the sky
Though everything’s wrung out dry
I’ll be a strawman running into a burning building

Hey, it’s alright
As long as I say that I tried
No levee could hold back this tide
Though I put up one hell of a fight
I’m not so much brilliant as bright
And someone else can turn out the light
When everything’s wrung out dry
I’ll be a strawman running into a burning building
Track Name: Sweet Tooth
SWEET TOOTH

I think you might be bad for me
Like stealing honey from the bee
With your sticky little fingers
Taste that tends to linger
Long after the sugar high is over
Everybody’s got their vices
Of all of mine, you are the nicest
Even when you cut out
Leave me feeling shut out
Locked out of the candy store

An all-day sucker nearly starved to death
I got a sweet tooth needs to be fed
You got a sweet little something, something
Turning my head, turning my head

I think I need an intervention
Every time you start to mention
Going somewhere private
I’m on auto-pilot
Don’t know where you’re taking me
Don’t much care
Never seem to get my fill of
What you give me when you will
I say I’m gonna quit it
Next time that I hit it
But I just keep coming back for more

An all-day sucker nearly starved to death
I got a sweet tooth needs to be fed
You got a sweet little something, something
I got a bad case of all-or-nothing
You got a way of laying on the bed
That’s turning my head, turning my head
Turning my head
Track Name: A Dynasty
A Dynasty

The men folk just fell apart
And the women and children were lost
You jumped ship and made for the shore
While the great boat perished in the storm
You took up with a native girl
Gap-toothed and hollow-eyed
And when your unholy progeny was born
Her father nearly skinned you alive

You cut west with your brood in tow
Trapped furs and felled trees to survive
Tried your hand at homesteading
Up in Oregon until the cattle died
Got swept up in the gold rush
But never panned out much more than the silt
You took hard to the bottle
They said you were blind drunk the night you were killed

Your poor widow, stoic and somber
Now with four mewling mouths to feed
Sold the only commodity at her disposal
Spent her nights on her back or her knees
And your eldest grew restless and violent
The suspect breeding that hamstrung his fate
Fell in with a band of outlaws
After six months he was wanted in five different states

Your great, great grandson sells cars in Deluth
Takes night classes in web design
Tells drunk girls in bars that he’s one sixteenth Shawnee
As his fallback pickup line
Some nights he dreams of a great wooden ship
A lone survivor who made it to shore
Wakes to his cold, uninviting one bedroom
And wonders if he couldn’t be more
Track Name: Emergency Room
EMERGENCY ROOM

Sound the warning bells,
Man the gates, and give ‘em hell
You’re on your own this time
You’re on your own this time
We’re both armed to the teeth
And who will be the first to blink
Here we draw the line
Here we draw the line
Here we hold the line

Tear out my thoughts
They’d never pass inspection
I am the cause
And you are the affected
I never meant
To give you this infection
I am the disease
And you are unprotected
You are unprotected

Hang the architect
Who built in holes in your defense
Blind spots left and right
Not ready for a fight
But don’t surrender now
I’m nearly at your starboard bow
There’s nowhere left to hide
There’s nowhere left to hide
Here we hold the line
Track Name: All You Got
ALL YOU GOT

What do you feel?
Is it an emptiness
Vacant and limitless
Vast and consuming you
How do you feel?
Are you longing for someone else?
Would you rather be by yourself?
Split the whole world in two

I am right here
Right where I’ve been
If you lose yourself
You can come back again
Never too late
Never a sin
Go find what you want to
And then come back again

What do you feel?
Are you haunted by the past?
Can you concede at last?
Taking the devil’s deal
How can you tell me
You only break your love
I am still standing up
I can still tell what’s real

So don’t you tell me
You only break your love
I can take all you got
I am still standing up
Track Name: From Every Direction
FROM EVERY DIRECTION

I was looking for the words to a song
That my children might sing when they’re grown
In a world that I left them,
Better than the one I’d known
We were waiting for the work to begin
Steeled our resolve against the cynical din
But they built us a shiny, bright box
And they herded us in

And the noise came at us
From every direction
To inundate, appropriate
Our every intention
Til our only defense
Was to throw up our hands,
Feign innocence
And say, “We kept trying right up to the fall”

We were looking for a chink in the chain
Where an advantage could maybe be gained
But the cool opposition entrenched held our onslaught at bay
They were lying in wait at the door
We were like so many wide-eyed fools who’d tried it before
We were so unprepared, overwhelmed
And we fell by the score

Sure they wanted the best for us
Junior achievers every one of us
But there’s only so much room at the trough, kid
Hey, It’s yours if you think you’re man enough to take it

I was looking for the words to a song
That could right a millennium of wrongs
But they burned all the books
To the delight of the fanatical throngs

But the noise came at us
From every direction
To euthanize, anesthetize
Our every emotion
Til our only defense
Was to throw up our hands
In vague comprehension
We stopped caring long before the fall
Track Name: Nerds At The Prom
NERDS AT THE PROM

Nerds at the prom
Hugging the wall
Scoping the room
Look at them all
Why are they here?
Didn’t they know?
Why doesn’t someone
Ask them to go
They’re so peculiar, they
All seem to say

Somebody dance with me
I’m not contagious
It’s not outrageous
For you to dance with me
This is my night, too
It’s all I want to do
I’m not looking for love
I’m not looking for love
I’m not looking for love
I’m not looking for lovely, lovely love

Nerds at the prom
Unchaperoned
Now taking bets
Who’s taking them home?
Pile in the limo
Pile on the teasing
Pile on the cruelty
Without any reason

They’re having a good time, they
All seem to say

With any luck you won’t even remember
Slings and arrows, sticks and stones
Chances are you won’t even remember
Make the last laugh yours and yours alone

They don’t care what you think
They have heard it all
Oh, they all seem to say
Track Name: The Impossible
THE IMPOSSIBLE

Once more from the top
My love’s overheating
I can’t cool it off
I can’t make it stop
Best lock me up
Before I kill again
Born out of boredom
Nurtured in lust
Starved for affection
A stranger to trust
But all the best novels
Traffic in sin

You ask me to love you
But not too much
Making me look
But you won’t let me touch
All that you
Want me to do
Is the impossible

Once more with feeling
You set the tone
I set the table
And still eat alone
All my fine cooking
Just gone to waste
Trying to meet
Your outrageous demands
Trifling objections
I don’t understand
Question my judgment
Don’t question my taste

If I were a building
You would condemn me
Acting your age
Is your way of pretending
All that you
Want me to do
Is the impossible

I’m scared to ask you what you’re getting from me
You just might say it’s not enough
Can’t decide if I should try
To salvage my last scrap of my manly dignity
But knowing you, you’d call my bluff
So I’m giving up

Taking advantage of my good humor
Waiting for love that is more than a rumor
And all that you
Want me to do
Is the impossible
Track Name: My Corner
MY CORNER

Freeze the frame where I gave in
Earmarked for your tell-all spin

You’re center court
You’re Page Six news
You’re on the cusp
You’re passing through
You’re in the slipstream
Crashing dreams
I swear you’re everywhere
But in my corner

Be the change you want from me
Waste my days imagining

Say you don’t remember us
The page torn from your omnibus

You’re center court
You’re Page Six news
You’re on the cusp
You’re passing through
You’re cutting edge
You’re VIP
Your name in bold
On the marquee
You’re in the slipstream
Crashing dreams
I swear you’re everywhere
But in my corner
Track Name: Wayside
WAYSIDE

The lady in the Poison shirt
She was queen of the 80’s dance
She could knock ‘em out in style
With her Bangles sideways glance
Now she works on the cannery floor
Where she barely gets the time of day
When she tries her signature look
All the fellas just look away

When did it turn?
The shift from the sweet
The drop in desire
The weight on her feet
There by the wayside
Who was last to let go?
Was it only her pride?
Was it all just for show?

So her sister, now twice divorced
Tells her she should settle down
Not getting that that boat
Has sailed and sunk and drowned
She thinks about the men she knew
And wonders if they’d take her call
Did they ever really care?
Was she ever close at all?

She’s oblivious to mirrors now
Unforgiving, but obsolete
She wants a course correction
She wants a staff retreat
She wants to keep pace
She wants to scream in someone’s face

When did it turn?
The shift from the sweet
The drop in desire
The weight on her feet
There by the wayside
Who was last to let go?
Was it only her pride?
Was it all just for show?
There by the wayside
How did she never know?
Track Name: Sugar Substitute
SUGAR SUBSTITUTE

Instead of coming back home to me
You made your way back to the bar
Where the boys are always buying the drinks
And you can brush off your old repertoire
Champion of the bait and switch
You were almost too sweet for me
And this sugar substitute
You’ve been serving up lately
Just lays me to waste
With its tin aftertaste

Now I’m back with the bitter
Stuck in the bland
Divining for water
With my head in the sand
Sift through the wreckage
Looking for clues
Trapped in my own skin
Discarded and bruised
I miss the sugar
Even though it’s nearly rotted my head
I miss the sugar
Even though you clearly left me for dead

I never know what’s good for me
It never took much to draw me in
And my short-term memory
Is so defective it’s almost a sin
It was right there on the tip of my tongue
But I stared too long at the sun
And the part of me that has any sense
Only works in the past tense
You laid me to waste
With your honey aftertaste

Skipped right to the ending
For spoiler of the century
Back when you first got hold of me
And you granted me entry
Guess I played this all wrong
Now the coda is half the song

I was the victim
You were the vice
You were the sugar
And I was the spice
You were the billboard
And I was the road
I was the burden
And you, the mother load
You were the grifter
I was the mark
You were the flare
I was the dark
I was the engine
You were the fuel
You were the joker
And I was the fool
Track Name: Tennessee Booty Call
The Tennessee Booty Call

I know I shouldn’t call you
It’s the middle of the night
We only ever did two things well
And one of them was fight
Well, no mystery it’s the other thing
That I got on my mind
So I think I’ll pop on over
If that’s alright

I know you said you’re through talking to me
But talking’s not a big priority
See I got this itch that I can’t scratch
And it just can’t be ignored
Cause I’m lonely, I’m horny and I’m bored

I blew all my money
Trying to meet someone new
But the fish, they just aren’t biting
And now I’m several kinds of blue
So honey, if you find yourself
With nothing better planned
I could be your fifteen minute man

I’m sure you could do better easily
But you could do a whole lot worse than me
So if you’re not too fussy
We can strike up an accord
Cause I’m lonely, I’m horny and I’m bored

I kept all of your letters
And the pictures that you sent
And I never showed a single soul
Except my twenty closest friends
They all agree the joke’s on me
For letting you get away
So how about one last roll in the hay?

We’ll hang the sign that reads “Do Not Disturb”
You can use me and then kick me to the curb
I’ll only ask five bucks for gas to stick in my old Ford
Cause I’m lonely, I’m horny and I’m bored
